Public pressure forced Energy Minister’s resignation, says Opposition

Opposition Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that despite the government winning the no-confidence motion with its majority, the Energy Minister was ultimately forced to resign due to intense public pressure.Speaking to the media today (20) after meeting with Most Ven. Kirulapana Suddhamma Thera at the Ranasinghe Premadasa Pirivena in Andaragasyaya, the Opposition Leader, noted that a serious crisis has emerged in the energy sector. He claimed that while the SJB presented scientific data proving that sub-standard coal was being used at the Lakvijaya Power Plant, the government continued to insist the coal was of high quality.Premadasa pointed out that the President himself had defended the Energy Minister in Parliament to justify the coal transaction, leading to the government winning the no-confidence motion with 153 votes. However, the subsequent resignation of both the Minister and the Secretary highlights that the public rejected the government's stance on the corrupt coal process. The Opposition Leader further alleged that the current administration has become a partner in a "fuel mafia." Citing concerns reportedly raised by a senior official at HSBC, he questioned why Sri Lanka is paying significantly higher prices for fuel compared to other countries. He criticised the government for imposing heavy taxes on fuel during a time of international uncertainty, rather than protecting consumers as other nations do.He emphasised that the SJB, as the only alternative government, remains committed to implementing a transparent fuel purchasing policy. He urged the government to stop defrauding fuel consumers, just as they had already impacted 7.5 million electricity consumers through the coal scandal.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama announced today (20) that the order regarding whether the seven cases filed against former State Minister Diana Gamage will be directed to other courts within the complex will be delivered on May 26. These cases involve charges of violating the Immigrants and Emigrants Act.The court is also expected to decide on that date whether the trials for subsequent cases should begin sequentially after the evidence examination of the first case concludes.Attorney-at-Law Mohan Seneviratne, representing the defence, requested that five of the seven cases filed by the Criminal Investigation Department be transferred to other Additional Magistrate courts, while the remaining two stay in the Chief Magistrate's Court. He further requested that the cases be taken up for trial one after another once the current proceedings wrap up.When the Magistrate questioned if simultaneous trials posed a problem for the suspect, the lawyer stated that while there is no technical issue, the request was made considering her mental distress. The State Counsel noted that a previous request had also been made to keep two cases under the Chief Magistrate and distribute the rest. After considering submissions from both parties, the Chief Magistrate scheduled the order for May 26 and postponed the case until then.

Record-breaking Bayern win Bundesliga

Record-breaking Bayern win Bundesliga

Bayern Munich clinched a 35th league title on Sunday by beating Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena - but could this prove to be the most impressive triumph of them all? After nearest challengers Borussia Dortmund fell to defeat at Hoffenheim on Saturday, Bayern needed only a draw to win a 13th title in 14 seasons. But, as has been the case all season, they turned on the style and came from behind to beat Champions League-chasing Stuttgart 4-2.Victory keeps Bayern's hopes of winning the Treble alive, with semi-finals against Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup and Paris St-Germain in the Champions League to come this month.BBC Sport takes a closer look at the numbers behind Bayern's dominant campaign. The best team in Bundesliga history? When Bayern began the season by thrashing RB Leipzig 6-0, it felt like an early warning to the rest of the Bundesliga.England captain Harry Kane, who scored a hat-trick, Michael Olise and summer signing Luis Diaz were on the scoresheet as Bayern swatted Ole Werner's team aside on home soil.Over the next 29 games that trio evolved into one of the most formidable forward lines the Bundesliga has seen, driving Bayern to a record 109 goals.Kane, Olise and Diaz have scored 59 of those. In the history of the Bundesliga, only two teams had previously reached the 100-goal mark - Bayern in 1971-72 and 2019-20.The fact that Vincent Kompany's side have surpassed that tally with four games remaining is testament to their breathtaking quality and relentless mentality. With three of their final matches coming against bottom-half opposition, including second-bottom Wolfsburg and bottom club Heidenheim, Bayern will have their sights set on pushing towards 120 goals. But it is not just in attack where Bayern have excelled this season. The 35-time champions have been equally impressive at the back, conceding only 29 goals.Should they win their remaining matches, they would equal the record for the most points in a Bundesliga season - 91, set by Jupp Heynckes' treble-winning Bayern 13 years ago.'You have to be winning major trophies'It was only fitting that Kane scored on a historic afternoon in Munich on Sunday. There have been several standout performers for Bayern this season, but none more so than the number nine.It was only two years ago that Kane was being challenged about his decision to move to Germany as Bayern ended a season trophyless for the first time in 12 years. But fast forward to the present day and Kane has not only helped his side return to the summit of German football by winning back-to-back titles, but has also put himself in contention to win football's most prestigious individual accolade - the Ballon d'Or - after netting 32 goals in 27 Bundesliga appearances this term.No player in Europe's top five leagues has managed more goals than Kane's 50 in all competitions. Now in his third season at Bayern, Kane is also delivering in the Champions League. This month he scored home and away against Real Madrid in the quarter‑finals to help Bayern reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2024, while equalling Frank Lampard as the highest‑scoring Englishman in the knockout stages of the competition with 15 goals."I could score 100 goals this season, but if I don't win the Champions League or the World Cup, you're probably not going to win the Ballon d'Or," said Kane in November."It's the same with any player. You have to be winning those major trophies."If he can help Bayern to a seventh Champions League title and play a leading role for England at this summer's World Cup, Kane would surely have a strong case to become the first Englishman to win the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001.2013, 2020... and 2026?Bayern's attention will now turn to completing the Treble for only the third time in their history after 2013 and 2020."In the way we play, we've learned and evolved over the last 12 months," Kane said last month."A lot of people forgot it was Kompany's first year last year. We were still learning the way he wanted to play. We were still learning different ideas from him."We've really honed in on his ideas now, and for sure we're a better team this year than we were last year."If Bayern win two more trophies this season, they would become the first European men's team to win the Treble three times. Can anyone stop them?-BBC

Man City now title favourites?

Man City now title favourites?

Erling Haaland's winning goal, the explosion of noise, the reaction at full-time.Sunday's result at the Etihad Stadium felt like the moment when the momentum of the Premier League title race had fully swung Manchester City's way following their monumental 2-1 victory over leaders Arsenal.Mikel Arteta's men still remain at the summit but are now clinging on to their position after seeing a nine-point lead chopped down to just three in the space of a week.City also have a game in hand and can leapfrog Arsenal by beating Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.Pep Guardiola's side tend to peak in the final two months of the season and are going through the gears once more. The Spaniard, though, played down the immense victory by saying: "Still we hope."But the truth is that we had a horrible calendar and we are not top of the league. So far they are the best team in England but we extend the chance to fight until the end. They are so competitive, we know that. But at the same time, we are too."The table speaks for itself. They have been the best. Congratulations to the guys, but don't lose the focus."'Game on' says ArtetaThe momentum is now firmly in City's favour - they have lost just once in the past 20 league games while Arsenal are beginning to wither, winning just one of their past six in all competitions.History shows City are immense during this part of the campaign too and their results in April under their boss provide fabulous reading for their fans and are frightening to those of an Arsenal persuasion. This month of the calendar remains Guardiola's favourite with his win ratio now standing at 71.4% - 2.53 points per game - while Arteta continues to suffer in his worst month, collecting 1.48 points per game with a win rate success of 39.5%.The odds - according to statisticians Opta - remain heavily in Arsenal's favour but their chances have fallen from 97% to 73% within a week, while City have leapt from 3% to having a 27% chance of winning the title. This season, Arsenal have been top of the table for 206 days while City have only sat at the summit for six days - and that was in the first week of the season.Since Arteta took charge of Arsenal in 2019, City have won the Premier League four times but it is Arsenal who have been at number one for the longest period at 537 days to City's 453.Arteta said: "We have full belief that we can do it. Today we showed again the team that we are. It's in our hands and it's there for the taking."The Spaniard added to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We lost an opportunity in terms of the result. They have a game in hand, we have three points."Game on because it is a new Premier League."'Heavy celebration' from City at full-timeLast weekend might have given the City players and fans real hope after Arsenal suffered a shock home defeat by Bournemouth and Guardiola's side capitalised with a statement win at Chelsea. With six games remaining for their side, they will now start to have real belief that a seventh top-flight crown in the past nine years is within reach. While Arsenal players slumped over at the end, City's convened in a huddle as supporters in the stands wildly celebrated claiming a massive three points. The travelling contingent made a quick exit from Etihad Stadium, while the City faithful jumped up and down to the tune of Milky's Just The Way You Are.That song is becoming the soundtrack of City's season, with the words reworked into catchy chants for new signings Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo."The full-time celebration felt a bit much," former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy told BBC Sport. "If you are an Arsenal player, you are thinking 'hold on, we're still leading'. It was a heavy celebration, I was surprised with that."I get it in the emotional moment and I have been in those games where I have done it and you celebrate too much. It did seem like they were celebrating the title. By winning the game as a group, they probably thought now we have a chance."Even a draw was handing it to Arsenal, so I do get it."Where does the result leave the title race?Haaland's second-half winner sparked a cacophony of noise after Cherki had given the hosts the lead, with Kai Havertz equalising in between following Gianluigi Donnarumma's error. Both sides still have their destiny in their own hands in this gripping title race - should City win all their remaining games it might not be enough as Arsenal may pip them on goal difference. On paper, Arsenal's run-in looks more favourable as their five remaining games are against teams in the bottom half of the table.City captain Bernardo Silva called the victory "very big" adding: "It puts us in a position if we win our game in hand we are on the same points."Two weeks ago this scenario didn't look very likely. I am happy we can be on the same points."One aspect of the title race was settled on Sunday with the prospect of an end-of-season play-off now over - should the teams be level on points, goal difference and goals scored come 24 May, City will collect the title by worthy of a better head-to-head record.Sunday's game was the latest into a season City had faced the league leaders since April 2012.On that occasion they beat rivals Manchester United 1-0 at Etihad Stadium courtesy of Vincent Kompany's winner en route to securing their first Premier League title on goal difference. Is history about to repeat itself?Who will win the title? Murphy and Rooney predictionsFormer Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney told BBC Match of the Day Arsenal will win the title by two points, with the Gunners winning all their remaining matches and Man City drawing at Everton. He said: "This title race is not over yet, I still feel like there are some more twists and turns to come. It is obviously going to be tight but City have got one more game to try to win, so I still have Arsenal down as slight favourites."I have been in this situation myself, where you need to win all your games. You look at your games and you think well we should win this one, or that one, but it never pans out that way."From now until the end of the season it is just going to be down to which team keeps their composure the best - that is who will win it."City's fixtures look a little bit more difficult. The Arsenal fans have a big part to play, they need to get behind their team.Ex-Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy told BBC Match of the Day, Man City will win the title on goal difference, with both teams winning their remaining fixtures. He said: "I think it edges it [the title race] towards City. Momentum, confidence and all of those things. I was really pleased with the game, I expected it to be much more cagey. Lots of quality and great moments, edge of your seat stuff."They are such powerful teams that I think they will win all the games. Bournemouth away could be tough for Man City and West Ham is probably the one to watch for Arsenal. But I think it will be goal difference and Man City will edge it."'A difficult train to stop'Ex-England goalkeeper Rob Green: "It's going to take something monumental for Arsenal to turn this around."Former Man Utd defender Gary Neville told Sky Sports: "City are on the right track and it's a very difficult train to stop if you're Arsenal. Serial winners coming out on top in big matches. City upped it a gear."Ex-Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I still think that Arsenal will win the Premier League. I think they have the easier fixtures, and Man City will slip up in theirs."-BBC

Spurs condemn 'vile' racist abuse aimed at Danso

Tottenham Hotspur have condemed the "vile, dehumanising racism" aimed at defender Kevin Danso on social media following their 2-2 draw against Brighton on Saturday. An error from Danso allowed Brighton's Georginio Rutter to equalise in stoppage time, keeping Spurs in the Premier League relegation zone.In a statement, the club said they have reported the "significant and abhorrent" abuse faced by 27-year-old Danso to the police and authorities."We will push for the strongest possible action against each and every person we identify," said Spurs."Kevin has our complete and unconditional support as a player and as a person. No-one at this club will ever stand alone in the face of this."Nothing about form or league position can ever excuse or explain racist abuse. There is no connection between performance on the pitch and the right to target a player with discrimination."We have heard and seen vile, dehumanising racism. Behaviour that is without doubt a criminal offence. It will not be tolerated."The abuse took place during the Premier League's No Room For Racism campaign this weekend, which is aimed at promoting diversity and tackling discrimination in football. In an Instagram post, external, Austria centre-back Danso said the abuse "doesn't define me" and "won't distract me from what is important"."I know who I am, what I stand for, and why I play," he added."Discriminatory abuse has absolutely no place in football or wider society," the Premier League said in a statement."Anybody who chooses to abuse others is not welcome in our game and they are not a true fan. It is clear that more needs to be done to address this issue and we will work alongside clubs, football bodies, law enforcement and social media companies to ensure this remains a priority for all."Any individuals identified and found guilty of discrimination will face the strongest possible consequences, including club bans and legal prosecution."It is the latest incident of racist abuse aimed at Premier League players this season, with four players targeted during a single weekend in February.Earlier this week, Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo highlighted further racial abuse he has received.A 47-year-old man was arrested and charged by Merseyside Police after Semenyo faced racist abuse while playing for former club Bournemouth earlier this season. The UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) is investigating the abuse of the four players in February, which included Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana and Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare. On Monday, Sunderland condemned racist abuse directed at forward Brian Brobbey on social media following his side's 1-0 league win over Tottenham.- BBC

Pakistan returns USD 2bn more to UAE

Pakistan returns USD 2bn more to UAE

Pakistan on Saturday repaid a $2 billion debt to the United Arab Emirates after seven years, further reducing its dependence on the Gulf nation whose support allowed Islamabad to sail through two economic crises of 2018 and 2023.Pakistan returned the $2b UAE debt by taking a new debt from Saudi Arabia, bringing the total repayments to Abu Dhabi this week to $2.5b, according to government officials. The finance ministry had not factored in these repayments till the end of last month and had assured the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that its external financing requirements were fully met on the back of rollovers by China, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government took the $2b loan in 2018 to sustain foreign exchange reserves that were on a downward trajectory due to delays in reaching a deal with the IMF. Another $450m UAE loan that Islamabad paid early this week was taken in 1996-97 for a year, which Pakistan returned after 30 years. There will not be any negative impact on the foreign exchange reserves that are hovering around $15b, as the debt is being repaid by contracting new debt.Finance ministry officials said that Pakistan would pay the remaining $1b UAE debt on Thursday. This would also be settled by availing another $1b Saudi loan that the kingdom will disburse next week. The UAE’s decision to demand its money back had created a $3.5b hole. Finance ministry officials said that the government had not factored in the UAE repayment, and it last month assured the IMF that “based on existing financing commitments from bilateral and multilateral partners, the [IMF] programme is fully financed for the next 12 months”.Under the $7b IMF programme, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and China had committed to maintaining their combined $12.5b in cash deposits with the central bank at least until the programme expires in September next year. Sri Lanka’s Diplomatic Renaissance: From Crossroads of Empires to Bridge of the Future

Sri Lanka’s Diplomatic Renaissance: From Crossroads of Empires to Bridge of the Future

FEATURE:Warsaw, POLAND: At a time of intensifying global rivalry, specially between the United States and China—Sri Lanka is repositioning itself not as a geopolitical battleground, but as a strategic and economic bridge linking East and West. This central theme emerged from a compelling and timely lecture delivered by Patrick Mendis at the prestigious Warsaw School of Economics in Poland.Prof. Patrick Mendis Presented Sri Lanka as a Model of Strategic Balance and Civilizational Strength for International Commerce.Drawing on deep historical insight, Prof. Mendis described Sri Lanka as the “Grand Central Station of the Indian Ocean.” For millennia, the island has been a hub connecting civilizations—from the Roman Empire to the Han Dynasty—through maritime trade and Buddhist diplomacy. Historical markers such as the Anuradhapura Cross, the reign of Parakramabahu I, and the Galle Trilingual Tablet by Chinese admiral Zheng He illustrate longstanding connections with Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. These pre-colonial networks continue to inform Sri Lanka’s global outlook in foreign and economic relations.A key theme of the lecture is that Sri Lanka’s foreign policy is rooted in its civilizational identity. Prof. Mendis highlighted three enduring pillars: its Buddhism-inspired ethos of compassion and coexistence, its advanced hydraulic civilization emphasizing sustainable livelihoods, and its long maritime trading heritage. These elements, he argued, are not historical relics but strategic assets shaping a modern, human-centered—or “anthropogenic”—approach to diplomacy. This philosophy aligns with the Colombo administration’s guiding principle: “friendship with all, enmity with none.”Geopolitically, Sri Lanka must carefully navigate competing pressures from three major actors. China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has left a significant imprint through projects such as the Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port. India, through its Neighborhood First policy, views Sri Lanka as vital to its maritime (Maha Sagara) security.Meanwhile, the United States and its allies—including Japan and Australia—engage Sri Lanka within broader Indo-Pacific strategies. Rather than aligning with any single bloc, Sri Lanka is pursuing calibrated neutrality, echoing an early U.S. principle of maintaining peaceful and balanced relations with all nations—often associated with the Jeffersonian motto: “Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations.”Europe also plays a renewed role in Sri Lanka’s external relations. Longstanding ties with the European Union are being revitalized through trade, tourism, and academic exchange. Countries such as France, Germany, and Poland increasingly see Sri Lanka as a stabilizing partner in the Indian Ocean. For Europe, Sri Lanka offers strategic access to key maritime trade routes; for Sri Lanka, Europe provides diplomatic and economic balance.Equally significant is Sri Lanka’s internal political transformation. The country is undergoing a transition away from family-dominated governance toward a more inclusive system with broader cross-ethnic and cross-religious support. This shift signals a commitment to transparency, pragmatism, and a more balanced foreign policy framework for national renaissance. With renewed political direction and strategic location, Sri Lanka is poised to serve as a vital commercial hub for trade and investment, diplomacy and goodwill, and cultural exchange and tourism—linking Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. The lecture’s conclusion was clear: Sri Lanka’s past is not merely history—it forms the foundation for a modern diplomatic renaissance suited to a multipolar world. Prof. Patrick Mendis is optimistic that the young but learned leadership is willing to take on the adaptive challenge in the years to come.Prof. Mendis brings exceptional and diverse credentials to this vision. An award-winning Sri Lankan-born U.S. diplomat and renowned international relations scholar and economist, he currently serves as a presidential adviser on national security education—appointed by President Joe Biden. He previously served as a U.S. commissioner to UNESCO during the administration of President Barack Obama. Earlier in his career, he was Sri Lanka’s first youth ambassador to the United Nations and the first recipient of a UNESCO Award from Polonnaruwa. Now a distinguished visiting professor at the University of Warsaw, he continues to shape global discourse on Indo-Pacific and transatlantic relations.Picture: Prof. Patrick Mendis (third from right) with members of the Geopolitics Ideas and Strategy Society at the Warsaw School of Economics in Poland

CIOB urges balanced CESS revision to protect local manufacturers

CIOB urges balanced CESS revision to protect local manufacturers

The Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) has formally written to key government authorities regarding the recent revision of the CESS structure applied to imports under HS Codes 6811.81 and 6811.82, welcoming the Government’s efforts to address longstanding concerns over high construction material costs while urging a balanced implementation approach that also safeguards local industry. In correspondence addressed to the Secretary to the Treasury and the Secretaries of the Ministries of Housing, Construction & Water Supply, Ministry of Industries, etc. CIOB noted that rising material prices have placed considerable pressure on housing affordability, private construction activity, and national infrastructure development. The institute expressed appreciation for the Government’s decision to take action aimed at easing these cost burdens on the wider construction sector.“However, CIOB also highlighted concerns raised by domestic manufacturers that this CESS revision may adversely affect local production capacity, employment, investor confidence, and the sustainability of industries that have made substantial long-term investments in Sri Lanka,” says Dr. Rohan Karunaratne, CIOB.. The institute noted that local manufacturers continue to play an important role in job creation, industrial development, and maintaining supply resilience.Accordingly, CIOB has recommended a phased and regularly reviewed implementation framework that continues to support lower material costs while allowing a fair transition for domestic producers. The institute further called for strict quality controls on imports, monitoring of market impacts, and safeguards where necessary to prevent unfair competition or harm to local manufacturers.CIOB emphasized that local manufacturers are a strategic pillar of Sri Lanka’s economy, creating jobs, building technical expertise, generating tax revenue, and reducing dependence on imports. They have invested heavily in factories, technology, and skilled workers while supplying essential materials to the construction sector and earning valuable foreign exchange through exports. Protecting and strengthening these industries is critical to national growth, supply security, industrial self-reliance, and long-term economic resilience.Especially, due to the global instability and war climate, disruptions to supply chains can easily occur. Therefore, for industry and economic stability we need to focus on locally manufactured materials to be self-sufficient as a nation. CIOB stated that the most effective policy outcome would be one that simultaneously improves affordability for builders and consumers, while preserving employment, investment, and long-term industrial stability in Sri Lanka by supporting our local manufacturers. The institute also conveyed its readiness to engage constructively with the Government and other stakeholders in support of a practical and sustainable way forward.

‘Divergent’ author announces 2 new books

‘Divergent’ author announces 2 new books

Fifteen years after launching the Divergent book series, Veronica Roth is returning to the franchise with two new novels. On Saturday, the author announced at BookCon in New York City that she’s written a new companion duology, set in an “alternate universe” in which the books’ young heroine Tris didn’t choose Dauntless.“Not a prequel, not a sequel, not a spinoff, not a different POV but an alternate universe of Divergent where Tris chooses a different faction,” explained Roth to USA Today. “I think the question of ‘who is Tris without Dauntless’ is an interesting one.”Although The Sixth Faction, available Oct. 6, can be read as a standalone book, Roth is particularly looking forward to franchise fans’ reaction to this new perspective on the character.Whereas the original book trilogy saw Tris choose Dauntless, the faction of bravery, in The Sixth Faction, tragedy strikes at her Choosing Ceremony, where her decision thrusts her into an underground rebellion. There, she meets a mysterious boy named Tobias ‘Four’ Eaton, Tris’ love interest in the original books.“For existing fans, I’m excited for them to see how the old and the new fold together,” Roth teased. “You’d think that certain things wouldn’t happen because she makes a different faction choice, but she does find her way to the same people. Seeing how that happens is a really fun part of it.”In the original books, Divergent (2011), Insurgent (2012) and Allegiant (2013), Tris Prior is a teen girl living in post-apocalyptic Chicago, where society is split into five factions. Finding out that she’s Divergent, which means she doesn’t belong to just one faction, Tris must conceal her status as a war brews.Shailene Woodley starred as Tris in the Lionsgate film adaptations, Divergent (2014), The Divergent Series: Insurgent (2015) and The Divergent Series: Allegiant (2016), with a planned final installment, Ascendant, which was never made.Roth expanded on the books with the 2014 short story collection Four, as well as the 2018 short We Can Be Mended, both of which were told from Four’s perspective.- Deadline

‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ easily tops charts

‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ easily tops charts

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” easily retained its box office crown in its third weekend of release, topping the charts with $35 million. The Universal and Illumination release is already the year’s highest-grossing film, having earned $355.2 million domestically and $747.5 million globally, and seems destined to eclipse the $1 billion mark worldwide. At this rate, expect the studios to get more Mario into production as fast as they can level up and Nintendo will allow it.Amazon MGM Studios’ “Project Hail Mary” also shone brightly in its fifth weekend of release, picking up $20.5 million for a second place finish. That brings the sci-fi adventure’s domestic gross to a stellar $285.1 million. However, the continued success of “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” and “Project Hail Mary” made it difficult for newcomers to gain much traction.“Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” had to settle for third in its debut weekend, earning a so-so $13.5 million. The Warner Bros. and New Line release didn’t cost much to make, carrying a budget of $22 million, but its final tally will be a far cry from the nearly $150 million that Cronin’s 2023 film “Evil Dead Rise” collected. Horror maestros James Wan and Jason Blum produced “The Mummy” through their production banners, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions, and it continues their run of monster movies, falling somewhere between 2020’s well-received “The Invisible Man” ($144.5 million globally) and 2025’s lamentable “Wolf Man” ($35.2 million globally). The weekend’s other new wide release, Magnolia’s “Normal,” took seventh place, earning $2.5 million. The action film stars Bob Odenkirk as a small town sheriff who stumbles on a larger conspiracy following a local bank robbery. Ben Wheatley, who has developed a reputation for boundary pushing ultra-violence with the likes of “Free Fire” and “High Rise,” directs. In its third weekend of release, A24’s buzzy relationship comedy “The Drama” took fourth place, earning $4.8 million. The indie film, which stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, has earned an impressive $39.7 million. That’s good news, because Zendaya and Pattinson will appear together in three films this year, popping up in “Dune: Part Three” and “The Odyssey,” not that those blockbuster films will rise or fall on their chemistry alone.Rounding out the top five, Universal’s rom-com “You, Me & Tuscany” picked up $3.8 million to bring its haul to $14.4 million after two weeks in theaters. In limited release, Focus Features’ “Lorne,” a documentary about “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels, debuted to $270,000 from 415 theaters, while A24’s “Mother Mary, earned $168,063 from just five locations.- Variety

Dhurandhar 2 to become third-highest-grossing Indian film ever

Dhurandhar 2 to become third-highest-grossing Indian film ever

On Saturday, Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge crossed an important milestone, reaching ₹1750 crore in gross worldwide. This is significant because it helped the film surpass Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule on India’s all-time highest-grossing films list. Dhurandhar 2 now stands in third place on the elite list, behind only Baahubali: The Conclusion and Dangal.By Sunday, April 19, Dhurandhar 2 had earned ₹1750 crore worldwide gross. This includes ₹1111 crore net in India, the second-highest collection by an Indian film in the domestic market. The film has also collected $46 million overseas, taking it just outside the top 10 of highest-grossing Indian films overseas. The ₹1750-crore gross is enough for the Ranveer Singh-starrer to overtake Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2, which earned ₹1742 crore gross upon its release in 2024. Unlike Dhurandhar 2, Pushpa 2 did the bulk of its earnings at home, earning a record ₹1234 crore net in India. Its international collections were $32 million.Dhurandhar 2 has now set its sights on SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2, which is in the second spot with worldwide earnings of ₹1788 crore gross (not adjusted for inflation). Dhurandhar 2 earned ₹6.70 crore globally on Saturday, and is expected to add around ₹7 crore more on Sunday. This will take its global gross to ₹1755 crore, just ₹33 crore shy of Baahubali 2’s lifetime earnings.Another record that Dhurandhar 2 may not break is Pushpa 2’s domestic collections record of ₹1234 crore. The Aditya Dhar film is over ₹120 crore behind right now, and does not have enough momentum to bridge that gap. (Hindustan Times)

Madonna joins Sabrina Carpenter to surprise Coachella

Madonna joins Sabrina Carpenter to surprise Coachella

Madonna surprised fans at Coachella making a guest appearance during Sabrina Carpenter's Friday night headline set. The Queen of Pop joined Carpenter on stage for a duet of Vogue, Like A Prayer and a song seemingly from Madonna's new album. The performance followed days of speculation that Madonna would appear at the festival in the Colorado desert in California. On Wednesday, Madonna officially confirmed the release of Confessions II - a sequel to her 2005 Confessions On A Dance Floor. After Carpenter finished a rendition of Juno, Madonna emerged while the intro of Vogue played out and dancers struck a pose. With matching blonde hair and lace corsets, the pair sang the 1990 house hit, before strutting across the stage to perform a new song."Thank you so much for inviting me on your show," the Hung-Up singer said. "No thanks needed, Madonna," Carpenter replied. "You can have whatever you want."Speaking to the crowd, Madonna said: "Twenty years ago today, I performed at Coachella - I was in the dance tent and it was the first time I performed Confessions On A Dance Floor: Part I in America and that was such a thrill for me. So, you can imagine what a thrill it is for me to be back 20 years later... so it's a like a full circle moment you know - very meaningful for me," before discussing astrology with the crowd. The 5ft 4in star then pointed out it was the first time she has performed with someone shorter than her. "Thank you for giving me that experience," Madonna joked. The pair then joined forces for a duet of Like A Prayer. The festival, which takes place over two weekends, draws more than 100,000 people daily, according to police from the city of Indio, and has been running at Indio's Empire Polo Club since 2002. Don Schlitz dies at 73

Don Schlitz dies at 73

Don Schlitz, one of the most widely revered names in the history of country music songwriting, died April 16 in a Nashville hospital after what was described as a sudden illness. He was 73.A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Schlitz may be best recognized by the public as the sole author of one of country’s most iconic singles, and possibly the genre’s most quoted song ever: “The Gambler,” a country-pop crossover smash for Kenny Rogers in 1978. It was the first song he ever had recorded by someone, but it was not all downhill from there. Most of his other hits were co-writes, many of them with fellow songwriting legends like Paul Overstreet. The collaborations with Overstreet include “Forever and Ever, Amen,” an 1987 smash in the hands of Randy Travis; other songs for Travis that included “On the Other Hand,” from 1986, and “Deeper Than the Holler,” in 1988; and “When You Say Nothing at All,” made into a country No. 1 by Keith Whitley in 1992 (and also successfully recorded by Alison Krauss & Union Station, plus Ronan Keating, who had a U.K. No. 1 with it in 1999).Sometimes Schlitz co-wrote with a recording artist, as with “I Feel Lucky,” a smash he co-wrote with its singer, Mary Chapin Carpenter, in 1992, and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” which Carpenter turned into another hit the following year.He had several enduring hits with the Judds, co-written with their producer, Brett Maher, including “Turn It Loose,” “Rockin’ With the Rhythm of the Rain” and “I Know Where I’m Going,” each of them a No. 1 country hit in the late ’80s for the mother/daughter duo.Others who recorded his material included Alabama, Sara Evans, Waylon Jennings, George Strait, Ronnie Milsap, Reba McEntire, the Bellamy Brothers, Tanya Tucker, Garth Brooks, Pam Tillis, Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Kathy Mattea, the Oak Ridge Boys and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.Schlitz’s many honors include his inductions into the Nashville Songwriters Association Hall of Fame in 1993, the (New York-based) Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012, the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2017 and the Grand Ole Opry in 2022.The Country Hall of Fame is especially notable because Schlitz was only the sixth songwriter to be inducted, at that time. The Opry’s recognization is similarly noteworthy because he was the only non-performing songwriter to be so inducted in the Opry’s history — although he certainly became a performer for his many regular appearances there, as he had in many songwriters’ round appearances at the Bluebird Cafe.Awards-wise, “The Gambler” won him the Grammy for best country song in 1978, and it became the CMAs’ song of the year the following year. Ultimately he won two Grammys, three CMA song of the year prizes and two ACM song of the year awards. He also was named ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year for four consecutive years, from 1988-91.His prowess extended to Broadway, when he wrote both music and lyrics for the 1999 musical “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”Schlitz often told the story of how he wrote “The Gambler” when he was 23, working at Vanderbilt University as a computer operator, aspiring to be a writer. One day, without a car, he walked 2-3 miles home from work and wrote the entirety of the song in his head along the way, except for the kicker. “I’m just making up this story song; I’m good at rhymes and meter, so I’m putting that in to it…. When I made it back to my efficiency apartment, I sat down at my dad’s old Smith-Corona typewriter — I’m a pretty good typist — and wrote it start to finish…without a last verse. When I was done, I knew it was too long and it didn’t have a love angle, and it wasn’t up-tempo, and it was a pretty linear melody,” he told the Library of Congress in a 2018 interview. One solution for the song was to have no solution. “At that time, I didn’t have the last verse, though I wrote 50 or 60 options. One version of it had 50 lines, another had another 50 lines. I didn’t know how to end it, how to get out of the song, and finally I just decided to leave it open-ended, let the listener decide what happens in the end, like an O. Henry finish.”Bobby Bare recorded it, but his record company didn’t think it was worthy of releasing. Three other versions came out, including one recorded by Schlitz himself, which he recalled peaking at No. 61. Then an ASCAP exec took to it and got it recorded by both Johnny Cash and Rogers, and the latter singer’s version was the one to make it to the starting gate.“Kenny’s version was really special and fit his persona. Then they did this amazing album cover. He changed a couple of words, he modulated after the first chorus. His version was more up-tempo. … The song became ubiquitous. It was everywhere. … Actually, I think it was a hit because it was a story, somewhat linear, and, it had no ‘finished’ ending! It allowed the listener to be involved. It respected the intelligence of the listener. And I say this with humility, or as much as I can muster, it wasn’t dumb. (Bob) McDill once told me, ‘You can’t write country music, looking down your nose at it.’ You have to respect your listener. Listeners are smart people. And it was a good time for a story song…“I can’t tell you enough about what Kenny did, for the song, for me, and for country music. Kenny has always been loyal, kind, generous with his praise. The power of Kenny Rogers, and Larry Butler — a genius producer. The right people at the right time.”He added, ” if it’s become an American folk song, I’m good with that. You know, I’m not a card player, not a gambler. I don’t do that. Besides, that’s not what the song’s about anyway. If it is, to some people, that’s great. But [the song’s] really about discretion. It’s about choices and the choices you make. Very simply — but very directly. I think when you hear the song, you hear the meaning of the story in Kenny’s voice. He put the wisdom in there.”Schlitz had only been performing on the Opry on a few occasions when Vince Gill formally invited him to become a member. Soon, he became a favorite of Opry audiences, regaling them with stories from his songwriting career after bluntly beginning with: “You have no idea who I am.”“I remember whispering to Vince onstage, ‘Don’t leave me here alone,’” Schlitz recalled of his first Opry appearance to American Songwriter in 2022. “I went out and played ‘The Gambler’ and everyone applauded. As we were driving home, we were quiet like old friends can be. I asked him, ‘Does it ever get old?’ He told me ‘Nope,’ and that has turned out to be true.”He had officially quit songwriting some time ago, saying the constant sense of inner mental research had wearied him. ““I woke up and looked at my wife and said, ‘I want to stop. I want to stop thinking about it all the time.’ That was my process. I listened to people talk. I read. I wanted to write songs that I wanted to hear. Most importantly, I wanted to find an honest way of saying something that came from my heart.”He still marveled at the unpredictable magic that makes for a hit, saying, “You never know what song is going to be the song, You’re going to tell me that a song that is too long about a guy talking to an older guy who is either drunk or doesn’t have any cigarettes of his own is something that needs to be written? Yeah, I wanted to hear that story.”Schlitz added, ““I’m not gonna think about my legacy yet. But I get to share Kenny Rogers’ legacy. Keith Whitley’s legacy. Randy Travis’ legacy. These are songs that they know from their heroes.”Schlitz is survived by his wife, Stacey; his daughter Cory Dixon and her husband Matt Dixon; his son Pete Schlitz and his wife Christian Webb Schlitz; his grandchildren Roman, Gia, Isla, and Lilah; his brother Brad Schlitz; and his sister Kathy Hinkley. Service plans are pending.“We are heartbroken by the news of the passing of Don Schlitz,” said Country Music Association CEO Sarah Trahern. “Don loved his family, his home state of North Carolina, and above all, songs and songwriters. He carried that love into every room, every stage and every lyric he ever wrote. His work, including timeless classics like ‘The Gambler,’ helped shape our genre and rightfully earned him some of its highest honors.“In recent years, he found great joy performing at the Grand Ole Opry, mentoring the next generation of songwriters, and sharing his music at Room In The Inn, giving back to the community he helped build. Wayne and I send our love to Stacey and the entire family. Not long ago, we shared a dinner, and as we were leaving, Don picked up a guitar and began to play. That is how I will always remember him, smiling and with a guitar in his hand. His legacy lives on through his music and the many artists and writers he inspired. He will be deeply missed.” - Variety

Michael Jackson film set to be a controversial hit

Michael Jackson film set to be a controversial hit

A new film about Michael Jackson's extraordinary but troubled life is set to open in cinemas. It's tracking to be very popular – but will it tell the full story?Bohemian Rhapsody was a troubled production, to put it mildly. The original star, Sacha Baron Cohen, departed and the original director Bryan Singer was fired. But the biopic of Freddie Mercury and Queen went on to make more than $900m (£660m) at the box office and win four Oscars.Given that success, it seemed logical when the producer of Bohemian Rhapsody, Graham King, revealed in 2019 that he would be making another biopic of a music megastar: Michael Jackson. In short, King was following Queen with the King of Pop.His new venture, Michael, had one obvious difficulty: Jackson had been accused of child abuse. In 1994, he reached an out-of-court settlement with one of his accusers, Jordan Chandler, and he was acquitted of molesting a 13-year-old boy in a criminal trial in 2005.Lawyers for the estate of Jackson and its executors, who are among the producers of the biopic, tell the BBC that they "firmly and unequivocally believe in Michael Jackson's innocence, which was unanimously adjudicated by a jury and supported by extensive evidence".All the same, the allegations remain a part of Jackson's life story, complicating the attempt to turn his life into a nine-figure Hollywood blockbuster. But given current demand for the pop star, it's likely to be a big hit, too. Industry analysts are predicting that Michael will be even bigger than Bohemian Rhapsody. If King had any initial doubts about the wisdom of giving Jackson the Bohemian Rhapsody treatment, they may have been allayed by the rise in his popularity since his death of a prescription drug overdose, aged 50, in 2009.On Spotify, he currently has 64.8 million monthly listeners and 40.5 million followers, making him the streaming service's 27th biggest artist in the world. His life and music are also the basis of a Cirque du Soleil spectacular, Michael Jackson ONE, which has been running in Las Vegas since 2013, and a Tony-winning jukebox show, MJ The Musical, which has been on Broadway since 2022. The biopic would just be the latest addition to the glittering Michael Jackson industry. It was announced in January 2023 that Michael would be written by John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator) and directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). It was later confirmed that the starry cast would include Colman Domingo, Miles Teller and Nia Long, and that the lead role would be played by Jackson's own nephew, Jaafar Jackson. And, as mentioned, its producer knows a thing or two about exultant pop biopics. In 2024, a spokesperson for the new film told the BBC in a statement: "From the beginning the Michael Jackson estate put their trust in Graham King, stepping out of the creative process." A complicated legacySo why is Jackson such a hot property, despite the accusations that once tainted his image? "There are several things at work here," Ludovic Hunter-Tilney, pop critic at the Financial Times, tells the BBC. "One is the lack of definitive legal proof [that Jackson committed any crimes]. Another is the branch of public relations dedicated to reputation management or rehabilitation. Jackson is now seen as a victim himself, bullied by his father, warped by fame, dying too young. And finally, most importantly, there's the fact that he's the ultimate pop star – a brilliant vocal stylist, a dancer to rival Fred Astaire, an entertainer with an indelible sense of his own sound and look." "Another factor," adds Ed Potton, culture commissioning editor at The Times, "is whether you've seen the Leaving Neverland documentary."This Emmy-winning four-hour documentary features the testimonies of Wade Robson and James Safechuck, two men who allege that Jackson had sexually abused them when they were children. It was broadcast in two parts on HBO in 2019, just a few months before the announcement that King would be making his biopic. In a letter to the BBC, lawyers representing the Jackson estate call Leaving Neverland and its 2025 sequel "one-sided hit-pieces attacking Michael Jackson".The documentary's director, Dan Reed, tells the BBC that he had read an early draft of the Michael screenplay that "contained many falsehoods, a great many inaccuracies and also just outright lies about the facts of his relationship with Jordan Chandler and Jordan Chandler's parents". Lawyers representing Jackson's estate tell the BBC that because Reed had not seen the finished film, his comments were "irrelevant and misguided". They added: "As the film was years away from completion at the time statements were made, they were false and defamatory speculative assertions". The film's revisions and reshootsThe film did indeed take years to complete. The production was delayed by the Sag-Aftra strike in 2023, but things got underway in the early months of 2024. King suggested at the time that the film would address some of the controversy relating to its subject. "Behind the unrelenting scrutiny and the accusations and the grinding media spotlight, [Jackson] was simply a man," the producer said at Las Vegas's CinemaCon in April 2024. "A man who lived a very complicated life. The movie will get into all of it...""The film charts Jackson's rise from family-band member to solo superstar, climaxing with a triumphal concert from the Bad tour in 1988. Nothing controversial is featured"According to a recent article in Variety, the film would certainly "get into" some of it. It "was supposed to explore the impact of the allegations on Jackson's life, with much of its third act devoted to the [Jordan Chandler] scandal", said the article. But somewhere, the plan was changed, according to articles in The New York Times, Variety, and elsewhere. In its current form, the film charts Jackson's rise from family-band member to solo superstar, and his escape from the control of his abusive father (Domingo). It climaxes with a triumphal concert from the Bad tour in 1988. Nothing controversial is featured. The Hollywood Reporter writes that after shooting was complete, Jackson's estate's lawyers realised that the scandal couldn't be included. When Jackson had settled with Chandler in 1994, one of the conditions was that Chandler couldn't be portrayed or referred to in any film. New scenes were written, and there were 22 days of additional shooting in June 2025. The release date was pushed back from 2025 to 2026, said The Hollywood Reporter.Variety reported that the reshoots cost between $10m and $15m, with the bill being settled by Jackson's estate. But if the revisions have turned the biopic into a purely positive celebration of its subject, that may come to seem like money well spent. There is even the possibility that some of the discarded footage will be used in a sequel. A spokesman for the film studio, Lionsgate, told the New York Times that "the unusual circumstances gave us the opportunity to shoot more material for what is effectively a Part One – the making of a king – while preserving the opportunity to tell more story in a subsequent film or films".- BBC
