Messi's father dealing with 'health-related situation

Lionel Messi's father is currently dealing with a "health-related situation", the family said in a statement on Thursday."At this time, he is under medical supervision, recovering and progressing favourably within the condition he is experiencing," the statement said.Messi was in tears after scoring his first goal in Argentina's 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening World Cup match earlier this week.Argentina's captain, 38, went on to complete a hat-trick, drawing level with Miroslav Klose at the top of the all-time World Cup goalscoring list."Why did I cry? It was something completely unrelated to football," Messi said after the match."I went through some difficult days, but I'm grateful to the entire delegation and my team-mates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength to help me get through it."The family addressed the speculation around Jorge Messi's health following that opening game."In light of speculation that has circulated in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep discomfort with the lack of sensitivity, respect, and discretion with which some people have treated what is strictly a private family matter."The family also wishes to clarify that only his closest relatives have real and accurate information regarding Jorge's condition. Therefore, any version, statement, or information that does not come directly from the family and its official channels should not be considered valid or truthful."The statement continued: "At times like these, we ask for responsibility, prudence, and humanity. A person's health and the peace of mind of those around them should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest."We sincerely appreciate the expressions of affection, respect, and concern we have received, and we ask that Jorge's privacy, confidentiality, and intimacy - as well as that of his entire family - be respected throughout this process."Argentina's next group game is against Austria on Monday 22 June (18:00 BST), before their final group game against Jordan on Sunday 28 June (03:00 BST).-BBC

Mexico edge South Korea to become first knockout qualifiers

Mexico edge South Korea to become first knockout qualifiers

Co-hosts Mexico secured their place as the first nation to qualify for the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup following a tense 1-0 victory against South Korea at the Estadio Guadalajara. Midfielder Luis Romo scored the decisive goal in the 50th minute, tapping into an empty net after South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu collided with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk and spilled the ball. The victory continues a perfect start for Javier Aguirre's side, who require only a draw against the Czech Republic on Thursday to guarantee top spot in Group A.The match provided plenty of late drama before a passionate home crowd of 45,522, who initially booed the hosts off the pitch following a scoreless first half. South Korea pushed aggressively for an equaliser in the closing stages, creating their finest opportunity in the 87th minute when Cho Gue-sung saw his close-range header blocked by Mexican goalkeeper Raul Rangel. Rangel then produced a vital follow-up save to deny Yang Hyun-jun from the rebound. Earlier in the match, South Korean captain Son Heung-min saw a chipped effort cleared off the goal line by Edson Alvarez, though the assistant referee subsequently flagged the play for offside.Mexico pushed for a second goal late in the game, with Raul Jimenez seeing an effort from a tight angle blocked before substitute Obed Vargas forced Kim into a diving save. A group victory ensures Mexico remains in Mexico City for their round of 32 and potential round of 16 fixtures, where a potential clash against England awaits. South Korea still retain a strong chance of progression to the next phase following their opening victory against the Czech Republic, and they look to rebound against South Africa on Thursday.-BBC

Canada crush Qatar in first-ever WC win

Canada crush Qatar in first-ever WC win

Canada secured their first-ever World Cup victory with a dominant 6-0 thrashing of Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver, though the historic occasion suffered a somber turn following a severe leg injury to midfielder Ismael Kone. The injury left manager Jesse Marsch in tears and overshadowed a stellar performance that put the co-hosts top of Group B ahead of Switzerland on goal difference. Jonathan David starred for the Canadians, netting a superb hat-trick to spearhead the goal rush against a Qatari side reduced to 9 men.The hosts opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Cyle Larin capitalised on a loose ball for a classic poacher's finish before David doubled the advantage 13 minutes later. Qatar's discipline collapsed shortly after when Homam El Amin received a straight red card for a professional foul on Tajon Buchanan, allowing David to claim his second goal in first-half stoppage time. The match took a tragic turn in the second half when a heavy challenge between Assim Madibo and Kone resulted in the Canadian midfielder being stretchered off the pitch while inhaling painkillers. A video assistant referee review upgraded Madibo's initial yellow card to a red, leaving the Asian champions with 9 players.Canada continued their relentless attack as Nathan Saliba curled in a spectacular 63rd-minute free-kick, celebrating by holding up Kone's jersey to the roaring crowd of 52,497. The disadvantage proved too much for Qatar, as Mohammad Al Mannai sliced an attempted clearance into his own net for an own goal before David rounded off his hat-trick in added time by driving a low effort past goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada to wrap up the historic victory.-BBC

Manzambi inspires Switzerland, dominates Bosnia-Herzegovin

Manzambi inspires Switzerland, dominates Bosnia-Herzegovin

Substitute Johan Manzambi inspired Switzerland to a thrilling 4-1 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Los Angeles Stadium, pushing his side to the top of Group B. The 20-year-old midfielder broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, firing a first-time volley past Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj just 166 seconds after stepping off the bench. At 20 years and 247 days old, the Freiburg starlet became the youngest player to score a double as a substitute in a men's World Cup match. The match turned chaotic in the final 20 minutes after Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic received a straight red card for bringing down Breel Embolo. Capitalising on the numerical advantage, Ruben Vargas doubled the Swiss lead with a precise curling finish into the bottom corner. Vargas then turned provider in the 90th minute, setting up Manzambi for his second close-range strike of the night.Bosnia managed a brief response through Ermin Mahmic, who struck a spectacular consolation volley from a corner during stoppage time. However, Switzerland quickly restored their dominance when captain Granit Xhaka converted a late penalty following a foul on Djibril Sow.The victory leaves Switzerland leading Group B with 4 points, whilst Bosnia-Herzegovina sit at the bottom of the table with a single point. Swiss manager Murat Yakin praised the impact of his young substitute, noting that Manzambi possesses immense freedom and unique street-football qualities that regularly surprise opponents. Switzerland now prepare to face Canada in their final group fixture with qualification to the knockout stages firmly within their grasp. -BBC

Brexit cost 6% of UK economy, Bank of England data suggests

Brexit cost 6% of UK economy, Bank of England data suggests

The UK economy has taken a 6% hit from the effects of Brexit, according to economists' analysis of internal Bank of England data about the decisions, views and financial results of thousands of British companies since the referendum a decade ago.Examining data that the Bank uses to decide on interest rates, the study analysed lost growth by trying to reconstruct how the UK would have grown if it had not voted to leave the EU.It found that about half the economic hit came from the sheer surprise and uncertainty of the post-referendum period while the rest was from rising trade barriers after the UK left the customs union and single market in 2021.But some critics say the study does not fully account for the outperformance of the US investment and tech industries or the European energy shock four years ago.Co-author of the study, British professor Nick Bloom from Stanford University, said the UK was growing fast in the years before Brexit and could have at least partially kept up with the US without the disruption. He argued the Bank of England company data offered important corroboration. His paper concludes: "In the case of Brexit, there was a substantial economic impact on the United Kingdom, but it arose gradually over the subsequent decade".It comes as the Bank's top officials have in recent months become increasingly candid in explaining the economic consequences of Brexit in speeches and interviews.Recently, the Bank's governor Andrew Bailey told journalists that as a consequence of Brexit: "I think the level of activity and growth in the economy has been lower.”-BBC

Delhi High Court upholds unprecedented Telegram ban in India

Delhi High Court upholds unprecedented Telegram ban in India

The Delhi High Court on Friday rejected Telegram's appeal against a temporary ban in India, delivering a setback for the messaging app which challenged the prohibition imposed to curb alleged exam-related fraud. Judge Tejas Karia ruled that the government orders banning the app were reasoned and strictly followed legal procedure. The unprecedented ban, active until June 22, was announced by India's IT ministry over concerns about channels claiming to sell questions for Sunday's national undergraduate medical entrance exam. The ban took Telegram completely offline and removed it from major app stores within hours, implemented by Indian telecom companies alongside Google and Apple. The platform, which counts India as its biggest market with more than 150,000,000 users, saw its founder Pavel Durov publicly criticise the move, claiming it punishes users while exam leaks simply move elsewhere. Reuters reported that the ban followed days of private sparring where the Indian government rebuked Telegram for failing to proactively remove accounts offering leaked papers.Telegram countered the government's account in its court filing, calling the description one-sided and inaccurate while noting that the company took down more than 900 links involving unlawful exam-related content. India will conduct its national undergraduate medical entrance exam on Sunday, exactly 1 month after authorities cancelled the results of the same test following widespread allegations that the question papers leaked in advance.-Reuters

'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' trailer released

'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' trailer released

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” starring Tom Holland back as Spidey/Peter Parker. The Sony and Marvel film is set to premiere in theaters on July 31. Following 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the latest entry into the Spider-Man universe (directed by Destin Daniel Cretton) picks up four years after the previous film’s end. Having erased himself from the lives and memories of those around him, Peter is living alone and “crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name,” per the film’s official logline. “He’s devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.” In addition to Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Jon Bernthal and Michael Mando all return, with new additions including Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colon-Zayas and Marvin Jones II joining the cast. In footage unveiled at CinemaCon, audiences got a glimpse at Zendaya’s MJ with a new love interest — and Parker’s realization that she’s moved on. So far, each new look at the anticipated “Spider-Man” film has delighted fans, and even set a few records. The film’s previous trailer made history as the first movie trailer to cross 1 billion views; the trailer, released on March 17, hit the milestone number in just four days. Within just 24 hours of the release, the trailer had already amassed more than 718 million views. At CinemaCon, Sony chairman Tom Rothman celebrated the achievement. “It’s as big as anything we’ve ever made, and yet it feels like nothing we’ve ever made,” he said. “And it has Tom Holland — and I can say this because I’ve seen the movie — in his finest performance.”“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, with Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige producing. 'Lilo' voice actor bids adieu

'Lilo' voice actor bids adieu

Daveigh Chase, the actress who voiced the beloved character Lilo in Disney's Lilo & Stitch and terrified horror fans as Samara in The Ring, passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 35.Meningitis and a blood infection caused her death, according to statements made by her boyfriend to TMZ. She had previously been hospitalised in Los Angeles earlier this month for malnutrition. Her father also confirmed her passing to the New York Times, revealing that she had been experiencing homelessness while living in Los Angeles with her boyfriend, and had faced struggles with substance abuse since the age of 13.The actress secured her breakout role in 2002 as the voice of Lilo Pelekai, the spirited young Hawaiian girl in Lilo & Stitch. Her performance earned her an Annie Award for outstanding voice acting in an animated feature, leading her to reprise the role in various spin-offs, including Stitch! The Movie in 2003, Leroy & Stitch in 2006, and the Disney Channel animated series. That same year, she showcased her versatility by bringing another major animated character to life, voicing Chihiro Ogino in the English-dubbed release of Hayao Miyazaki's acclaimed Japanese masterpiece Spirited Away.Beyond her voice work, she made a massive impact on the horror genre by portraying Samara Morgan, the vengeful entity behind the cursed videotape in the 2002 smash hit The Ring. While the physical performance relied on multiple actors across the franchise—including Kelly Stables and contortionist Bonnie Morgan, who executed the famous television crawl—archival footage of her original performance was utilised for the later instalments The Ring Two in 2005 and Rings in 2017.Her live-action portfolio also included portraying Samantha Darko, the younger sibling of Jake Gyllenhaal's character in the cult classic Donnie Darko, a role she later reprised as the lead in the 2009 sequel S. Darko. On television, she held a recurring role in the HBO drama Big Love and voiced the central character in the educational series Betsy's Kindergarten Adventures. Her final professional acting appearances occurred in 2016.
